USE OF PRESSURE GARMENTS FOR ORTHOPEDIC PRACTICE
The second largest use of pressure garments is for orthopedic patients. Fractures of the lower extremity particularly with advancing age tend to cause oedema due to trauma & due to gravity. This affects healing & intensifies pain. After the plaster cast has come off the use of pressure garment is advisable to accelerate the process of healing. In cases of fractures of the wrist, the thumb & the small bones of the hand, use of a hand glove is desirable. I n case of an Amputation a stump support is mandatory initially alone as a support & later under the prosthesis. Back pain whether due to spinal injury or spondylosis, due to sacralisation of the first lumber vertebra, or of idiopathic origin is the strongest recommendation for the use of pressure in the form of a support belt. Various Sport injuries such as Tennis elbow or injury to the Wrist in Badminton players or pain of unknown origin, Scaphoid injury (posttraumatic or pathological), early cases of Arthritis, Knee injury all these patients benefit from the use of pressure garments.
