USE OF PRESSURE GARMENTS
FOR ORTHOPEDIC PRACTICE
The second largest use of pressure garments is for orthopedic
patients. Fractures of the lower extremity particularly
with advancing age tend to cause oedema due to trauma
& due to gravity. This affects healing & intensifies
pain. After the plaster cast has come off the use of
pressure garment is advisable to accelerate the process
of healing. In cases of fractures of the wrist, the
thumb & the small bones of the hand, use of a hand glove
is desirable. I n case of an Amputation a stump support
is mandatory initially alone as a support & later under
the prosthesis. Back pain whether due to spinal injury
or spondylosis, due to sacralisation of the first lumber
vertebra, or of idiopathic origin is the strongest recommendation
for the use of pressure in the form of a support belt.
Various Sport injuries such as Tennis elbow or injury
to the Wrist in Badminton players or pain of unknown
origin, Scaphoid injury (posttraumatic or pathological),
early cases of Arthritis, Knee injury all these patients
benefit from the use of pressure garments. A pressure
garment can be designed & fabricated for almost any
part of the body. Commonly used garments in prevailing
