I
IN BURNS:
Burns particularly
deep burns tend to cause hypertrophy & keloids. Pressure
therapy in Burns once healed helps in obviating or reducing
the hypertrophy. Itching a common feature associated
with deep Burns or hypertrophy in posttraumatic scars
is stressful for patients. The custom made garments
generate adequate pressure over the requisite body areas
to prevent hypertrophy or reduce it once it has already
occurred. The Histological examination of a hypertrophied
scar has shown that the regular usage of a pressure
garment causes alterations in the collagen fibrils from
the whirl type nodular arrangement often seen in hypertrophic
scars to an orderly parallel appearance of fibrils.
The pressure garments if used for an adequate period
(which may stretch from few months to a few years) accelerate
the process of smoothening & flattening of the scars.
Hence the overall appearance of scars is greatly improved.
The use of pressure garments along with active physiotherapy
can prevent, even reduce the appearance & intensity
of contractures so often seen in ill treated burns.
Pressure garments made to individual need & worn for
almost 24 hrs. a day greatly improve the texture as
well as colour of the tissues to near normal.
